Types of Psychotherapy & Counselling
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist registered with the British Psychological Society. I provide psychological therapy to address a wide range of emotional and behavioural difficulties using the following approaches:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Psychodynamic
- Humanistic (Person Centered)
My doctoral training and clinical experience enables me to assess clients' difficulties from a number of different theoretical perspectives. This allows me to take an holistic approach and to suggest which type of therapy is most likely to be effective for each individual, based on their specific needs and the current research evidence.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a relatively short-term type of psychotherapy, which studies have demonstrated is as effective as medication for a wide range of psychological problems including: anxiety, depression, obsessions and fears. The emphasis is on how you are thinking and behaving now, rather than on your past experiences.
Psychodynamic and Humanistic (Person-Centered) Approaches
Psychodynamic and person-centered approaches to counselling focus on gaining understanding and insight about yourself and your past as a precursor to change.
At the initial assessment session I explain the different approaches and answer any questions you may have.
Confidentiality
All Chartered Psychologists are bound by the Code of Conduct and Ethics of the British Psychological Society. This means, amongst other things, that confidentiality is paramount.
